La Festa de Gràcia Aug 15-21 - street festival Gracia, with its narrow, winding streets and its timeless charm, is one of the few neighborhoods in Barcelona that still maintains its old-time feel. The village of Gracia lay outside Barcelona’s borders until 1897, and exemplifies the many small rural villages that were later annexed by the city, without losing an ounce of original character. With its plazas and quaint residential buildings, the neighborhood warrants slow, meandering strolls, with a surprise in store at every corner. The mark of Modernist architecture, particularly that of Gaudí, is also to be found in Gracia, from the Casa Vicens to the magnificent Park Güell, today considered the artist’s most important work. The different and highly unique spaces spread throughout the neighborhood come together to create a truly distinctive personality that reflects the vitality and unity of the bohemian, artist community that makes up its primary demographic.

Park Güell is public park designed by the architect Antoni Gaudí, the greatest exponent of Catalan modernism, commissioned by the entrepreneur Eusebi Güell. The Park Güell is a reflection of the artistic fullness of Gaudí: it belongs to his naturalistic stage (first decade of the twentieth century), a period in which the architect perfected his personal style, through inspiration in the organic forms of nature, to which put into practice a whole series of new structural solutions originated in their deep analyzes of the regulated geometry.

1. Central Market open Mon-Sat 7-3 2. Walking tour - street art - start at Plaza del Tossal, where a Biblically-sized snake-bearded Moses resides, and a little farther north, snails pull a Brobdingnagian horse. - Then walk to Calle de los Jardines to see a flowery scene with kawaii (cute) characters and a masked Mexican wrestler riding a carp below a fluttering hummingbird. - On Calle del Museo, look for No.9, where a miniature house for cats — with an entryway used by resident felines — is detailed down to the window dressings. - From there, head south on Calle del Pintor Fillol to pass more distinctively sunny handiwork from the artist Julieta XLF, David de Limón’s skinny ninjas and, most appropriately, a rabbit and a chicken battling above a paella pan.

hilltop village tucked in a steep valley at the foot of the Teix mountain, Deià has long been a magnet for famous artists and writers including novelist Robert Graves and theater impresario Andrew Lloyd Webber, who has written several Broadway musicals there. After exploring the village’s small boutiques and fabulous restaurants, make your way down to the small pebbled Cala Deià beach to lounge in the sun and grab a tinto de verano at the pair of seaside bars.
