A Series of Unfortunate Events

A Series of Unfortunate Events

So I have this theory: some trips just have a curse on them. That doesn’t mean they are not good, but it just means that everything is more difficult.

This was definitely my trip in Corfù, Greece.

I like to remember this trip with the title of an old movie “ A series of unfortunate events” .

I was nineteen, and me and my friends organized a trip to Greece to celebrate the end of high school. It’s a sort of tradition that when you finish high school you have a trip solely dedicated to fun, clubs, drinks, beaches. You don’t go to museums you just go to have pure fun.

It was a big group and we had everything planned, we were down to the best holiday ever, so excited. Every ingredient to the perfect time in a Greek Island was there.

But let me take you to the path of bad choices that led us to live the craziest and most unbelievable time in Corfù.

The first bad choice: we caught a ship from Italy to Greece.

This was the most economic way to get there. But never ever again I’m taking a ship to go somewhere. Let’s leave this thing in the 19th century where it belongs.

The trip was so long. It felt like ten days when it was actually 12 hours. I was confident I was just going to sleep during the night and that’s it. I mean I already had some big trips to the other side of the world, this couldn’t break me. Well, I was optimistic.

We didn’t book a cabin so it was actually impossible to fall asleep on the chairs, plus the AC made it feel like we were in the North Pole so much that it was warmer outside. Even though we were in the middle of the sea at night.

After hours and hours of complete distress I finally decided to go sleep on the floor outside. That wasn’t the wisest choice but at least I was rewarded with the sight of a great night sky and even some dolphins cutting the sea. That made it worth it.

But I actually didn’t sleep at all and the night before I didn’t sleep as well pulling an all nighter because we wanted to sleep on the ship. I was so tired that I legit asked my friend if you could actually die from a lack of sleep. I was dead serious.

Eventually we got to the island. The sea looked crystal clear and we were ready to have the time of our life. But first we had to find a way to move around the island: motorcycles.

From that choice on everything went downhill.

I never drove a motorcycle before, so we made sure that only the people who could actually drive had one. We rented them and everything worked perfectly. We got on our motorcycles and we were having the time of our life already.

We decided to go look for hidden beaches. We soon enough found out that roads in Greece aren’t the easiest nor the safest.

As we were riding our motorcycles I hear a loud noise behind me: two of my friends fell. Luckily enough, even though they got injured, there was nothing too serious.

I mean it happens, it was okay, they were going to get better.

We rushed to the hospital and stayed a couple hours there until they told us they had to stay the night for safety reasons.

In the meanwhile the rest of the group tried to settle the house, the food and everything. As they were going to the grocery store though they slipped with the motorcycles as the road had holes. Aaand it was two more down. They were taken to the hospital as well, and that already felt surreal that, in not even ten hours 4 out of 8 were injured.

The group split up and some of them went to look for a nice beach to go to the next day. One of the girl decided to jump in the water but as soon as she got in the water, some big waves started shattering everything on the rocks, her included, and she cut herself under the chin. She was at the hospital too.

It was bad but at the same time it felt like a joke. We were laughing and crying at the same time.

Now we were all at the hospital tying to sort this out, and trying to understand what kind of curse we had.. “A series of unfortunate events”.

Two of us went to the houses we rented to grab the keys and leave our stuff.. when I got a call.. “you got to be kidding me” was all I could think of.

Their motorcycles broke down while they were going home and they fell too.

All of this, in under 24 hours.

We didn't let that take us down though and we went on to go from the hospital to the club to the beach to the hospital back again.

I was the only one who wasn’t injured and I couldn’t help but feel I was under some lucky star that day.
