Dubrovnik, Old Town

Trips for transport around Dubrovnik: Do not travel using taxis because they are extremely expensive. Hiring an Uber is an alternative option, however it should be noted that Uber is actually illegal in Croatia. The main transport system in Dubrovnik is the bus. One ticket costs 15 kn (Kuna) but you can buy a daily ticket for 30kn; therefore I recommend that. You can buy your tickets in these kiosks called 'TISAK' stands. Note that when you enter the bus you must enter using the doors near the driver – it is against the rules to enter using the other doors.

Begin your tour of the old town from here.

Climb up to the top and walk on and along the city walls. See the old town from up high. Start early in the morning as it takes around 2-3 hours to make a full round. The entrance opens at 8 a.m. Remember to pack some sunglasses and a hat because it tends to be hot in Dubrovnik these days!

Visit the oldest pharmacy in world; the Franciscan Monastery of the Male braće. Here, historical books with recipes of old drugs made during the 14th to 20th century are kept. You can also view the ancient goods which were served for drug preparation. The pharmacy is located when you come in through the main gate. It is about 15m on left (opposite the fountain).

Enjoy your stroll down the main street of the old city. There are many interesting shops here to see.

The best local bar in Fontana is the Cafe Bar Fontana. The prices there are much lower than any other cafe in the Old City. This cafe was renovated this year and has a really nice ambience with a good assortment of local brandys and of course, beer!

This baroque church is one of the city's main sights. At the top stands the statue of Saint Blaise, patron saint of Dubrovnik, flanked by Faith and Hope on either side. The interior of the church is very detailed. Appreciate its marble altars and rich baroque decoration inside.

If you have time, visit this museum Knežev dvor. This museum was used to serve as the seat of the Rector of the Republic of Ragusa between the 14th century and 1808.

See the cathedral of Dubrovnik. It is located near Knežev dvor and has a beautiful cupola which was made by Italian builders.

Here is a nice spot to take a short breather from the crowds during peak season.

Nice place to enjoy a refreshing beverage and watch the boats coming in and out.

There is an exhibition of paintings in this palace, Sponza. These paintings are from a famous Dubrovnik artist, Nikola Šimunović. The exhibition is typically open everyday from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Need a coffee/drink. Get a cheap one here, and with great atmosphere too.

Another one of the most beautiful monasteries from the 13th century is the Dominican monastery. This monastery contains many paintings of the most famous Dubrovnik painters and many Italians.

You may also visit the ethnographic museum, Rupe, if you are interested in how Dubrovnik kept its supplies of grains, old clothes, dishes, tools, weapons and pictures.

You can't leave Dubrovnik before heading to a beach! Jump into the water in Lokrum. There are rocky beaches on rocks here, however, if you prefer sandy beaches with a cool atmosphere, head to Banje beach.

A fantastic spot to visit is the hill, Srđ. You need to take a cable car in order to get there, however, from there you may visit the whole city. The cable car is located above the Old City. It operates everyday from 9 a.m. 12 a.m., however I recommend going there about 6 p.m. so you can grab a nice drink and relax at the peak. It is truly wonderful there.

If you can afford this place .. Stay the night at hotel More. Set next to its private beach, the 5-star Boutique Hotel More offers elegant accommodation, spa & wellness centre, an outdoor pool, a restaurant and the unique Cave Bar.

Another place for a cold one .. The best beer in town is from the Gaffe Pub. It'd be crowded with a lot of tourists but that beer... is worth it.

Stop for a drink at the Buzz bar! It is located within the Old City and is 100% local. It has a large offer of local beers and wines, and great live music!

You can also take a boat to get you to an island called Lokrum. There, you can visit a monastery and fort which was built in 19th century. It is a pleasant place to go for a swim, but note that a ticket costs 15 euros and you must depart early in the morning to catch the boat.

If you love fast food, the best hamburgers and sandwiches are near the Old City. It is a small local fast food restaurant with fast service and cheap prices. I eat here almost every week.

If you are big fan of Game of Thrones, you may take a tour in front of Old City. If you didn't already know, Dubrovnik was the main filming location in Croatia for the King's Landing! In my opinion though, the tours you can book are overrated. Click on the link if you would like the check out tour options – or you could even self tour.

During the afternoon, visit 2 beautiful spots which provide a view of the Old City. The fortress, Lovrjenac, provides a beautiful view of the Old City – it also holds theatrical performances which you may attend.

If you like pizza, the best pizza in town is definitely the restaurant Vita Bella. It has great reviews and I personally eat there every time I get a pizza craving.

In the old fort Revelin, is now a disco club (in my opinion the BEST disco club in Dubrovnik due to its amazing ambience and famous DJs.)

Usually when I travel, I leave the last day for leisure. So, if you enjoy nature, I recommend you to go a park in Petka. It is park with a nice walking trail and untouched nature. It is about a 30 minute walk.

You may also want to visit a famous walking trail with a lot of restaurants and coffee bars nearby.

In my opinion the best restaurant that serves local, authentic food is Pantarul. They offer typical local food and wines. It operates every day except Monday from 12 p.m. to 12 a.m.

If you are fan of Japanese food, I absolutely recommend the Shizuku Japanese restaurant. Many sushi fans from all over the world have said that they have never tried any sushi as good as the sushi sold at Shizuku. I am also huge fan of this restaurant. It is located near Pantarul.

The most famous gallery in Dubrovnik is the Dubrovnik art gallery. This gallery is 10 minutes away from the Old City. The exhibition is open everyday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
